Kentucky to Require Ice Baths & CPR Training

The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that the House Education Committee (HEC) for the state of Kentucky passed on February 24th a measure which looks to improve the safety for high school athletes in light of the death last summer of a Pleasure Ridge High School football player.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Joni Jenkins (D-Shively), passed the HEC unanimously and now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
The major aim of the legislation is to require ice pools at practices and games when the heat index hits 94 degrees or above. It would also require coaches to be trained in CPR and the use of devices for individuals suffering cardiac arrest. Local school boards would be required to purchase the devices – automatic external defibrillators – for every school in their district, but the bill makes request for the state Department of Education to compile a list of grants and other means of financial support by which the equipment could be obtained.
